If you struggle with sleep, it may be worth a shot to implement a cup into your nightly routine. A variety of sleepy tea called Extra has valerian in it, and some studies have found that this herb can cause headaches, dizziness, and an upset stomach, Gans says. One ingredient in particular-valerian-may also cause some unwanted side effects. “Also, pregnant and nursing women and those suffering from low blood pressure may be more apt to risks and side effects and definitely want to check with a healthcare provider.” “ Some people have reported allergies to some ingredients in herbal teas, like chamomile,” Schlichter says. It’s always best to check with your doctor before starting a regular routine. And, there are certain teas or ingredients you may want to avoid if you are taking certain medications. While chamomile is listed on the FDA’s list of ingredients generally recognized as safe (GRAS), some people may experience some side effects, like allergies. In general, sipping these teas regularly before bed is safe.
This is followed by an underscore and the actual name of the skin. Next, there are three letters which identify the skin tone as either light (lgt), medium (med), or dark (drk). For body skins (but not heads), the next three letters identify the body type. Technically, child skins could be identified as "uc" (unisex child), but this was rarely done in practice. Gender is identified with "f" (female) or "m" (male), while age is identified with "a" (adult) or "c" (child). The next two letters identify gender and age, respectively. Maxis always used numbers, but creators could, and often did, use letters. The next three characters are an identifier for the mesh. Formal, Swimwear, Winterwear and High Fashion skins are identified by their initial letters, though players should note that hand files also begin with "H". Pajamas are identified with "L" (for Lingerie). Everyday skins are identified with "B" (for Body). Heads are identified with "C" (for Cranium). The first letter identifies the type of skin. In The Sims, all information about a skin file is carried in its filename. Likewise, buyable pajamas, swimwear, etc., for children with custom body types must be labeled as being for the "chd" body type. Therefore, buyable pajamas, swimwear, etc., for adult Sims with custom body types must be labeled as being for the "fit" body type, or those Sims will not be able to access it. However, if Hot Date or later is installed, clothing racks will see adult Sims with custom body types as "fit". Custom body types are possible, and they can have their own three-letter identifiers. The basic body types are "fit", "fat", "skn" (skinny), and "chd" (child). (a censor blur appears on top of a naked Sim). There are also nude skins for when a Sim is using a toilet, using the Vibrate interaction on another Sim or is taking a bath or shower. Skins are available for different modes of dressing: Everyday, Pajamas, Swimwear and Formal. Some creators made "pale" versions of the light skin tone and made them available for use by others. True custom skin tones aren't possible, but variations of the basic skin tones are, as long as they're named so that the game engine "sees" them as light, medium, or dark tones. However, if a Sim appears to be wearing accessories such as glasses, it is usually because they are painted onto the Sim's head or body skin. Some skins have accessories such as hats and glasses, which have separate BMP and mesh files. For example, a skin might have white hands so a Sim using it will appear to be wearing white gloves. A Sim's hands normally match the Sim's skin tone, though it is possible for a skin to have custom hands. Originally, the default formal outfits used formal hands, but these hands were not used after Hot Date. However, a Sim's hands are separate hands are not part of body skins, but are defined separately in the Sim's character file. Each image file is that Sim's entire body or head, including skin (there are 3 skin tones - light, medium and dark - and it is common for the same outfit to be made in all 3 tones) and hair. Both are simple 256 color (8-bit) bitmap images, numbered to correspond with the mesh file which gives them the desired shape on the Sim. Skins in The Sims are comprised of two parts per Sim: a head and a body. However, they will continue to work with Paramount on franchises such as Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, Top Gun, Terminator, Jack Ryan, and Transformers. That’s plenty of major differences for me to close the skating gap and make me think he will be the superior pro.īultman: It sounds like you’re split on the evaluation of these two centers, not just the value of their profiles. But otherwise Danielson is 2.5 inches taller, with better skill, finishing ability, and overall track record of scoring. Moore gets a significant edge in the skating department, there’s no question about it. Some may argue that Moore didn’t get PP1 time/premium offensive opportunities, but Danielson had very iffy linemates around him all season while being the guy teams always matched up so I think those issues balance out. He is a better shooter, as I thought Danielson was a more consistent threat shooting from mid-range/faceoff dot this season and a multi-dimensional guy on the power play. He is only a couple months older but his junior production is better, both in his draft season and as an underage in a better junior league. He’s a play driver with high-end hands who can create at high tempos. The one major disagreement I have is the skill and creating. Read more: 2023 NHL Draft: Who are Corey Pronman’s favorite prospects?īultman: Corey, why should Danielson go first?Ĭorey Pronman: I agree with a lot of the things Scott said above. There’s just more dimension in a couple of small ways (Danielson can finish around the slot, too, no question) and certainly one major one. Moore is a world-class one - best-in-class - and will be able to transport pucks in transition and put defenders on their heels in ways that few can.īut I’d also argue Moore has the edge as a handler and shooter, too, with an ability to create more looks for himself inside the offensive zone, beat the first layer of pressure, and finish with a wrister that comes off a little harder. NHL Draft mailbag as we're under two weeks to go But outside of Danielson being a couple of inches taller, I think there are some important separators that favor Moore. Both showed they could carry a line this year. They’re both strong athletes who play hard. Scott Wheeler: Ultimately, I think Moore will just be capable of impacting the game in more ways at the next level. We’ll give Scott the opening statement here: Why would you take Moore ahead of Danielson? Scott, you have Moore in your top 10 and Danielson at 20, and Corey, you basically the opposite. Max Bultman: Let’s start with two of the top centers in this class, Oliver Moore and Nate Danielson. 1, but where do Fantilli, Carlsson, Michkov land? Read more: NHL Staff Mock Draft 2.0: Bedard is No. I worked for JP Morgan Chase, and was routinely told to falsify my records. Their executives say to cut costs, and the underlings do whatever it takes to make upper management happy. We all know how ridiculously greedy American corporations are nowadays. They could always claim they had no idea their sources were mixing in non-American apple juice. Who knows for certain where all their juice actually comes from? Any company cutting pennies per bottle is probably squeezing everywhere. Martinelli’s does still claim to be from US grown apples, but the question is, do you trust them, and every one of their suppliers? Any company so cheap as to stop including little plastic caps with their bottles isn’t to be trusted, if you ask me. The other type of juice from the same company may have listed the source of the ingredients, but I couldn’t find it. It may not be totally rational, but I wanted to avoid buying juice with Chinese concentrate until I could research whether there are safety concerns about that ingredient. I don’t know about food safety in Argentina, but remembered flaps about Chinese garlic and milk. Just before putting it in my cart, I read the label while the apples were grown in the US, the apple juice concentrate was from Argentina and China as well as the US. Once again stunned at the number of brand and type choices, I grabbed a bottle of unsweetened apple juice, thinking that I was on the home stretch. The last item on her list was apple juice. Can you tell that I’m a city girl and that she lives in the suburbs? Simply walking from the produce section to the dairy case provides at least ¼ of the steps of my daily Fitbit goal. The selection of items is so phenomenal that sometimes I have to just stop and stare at the shelves and display cases. Honestly, I treat going there as a cross between a field trip and a shopping triathlon. Trying to be a good daughter, I do my mom’s grocery shopping. Our story begins with my good deed for the day. Finding out where packaged food ingredients are grown or manufactured can be a treasure hunt, with hidden clues that puzzle and surprise even the most determined food shopper. And now I have another reason to read them carefully – and to examine other parts of packaging besides the label. Lately I’ve been reading food labels to find out how much salt and hidden sugar items contain. But wouldn’t you like to know where it comes from? Maybe you’re fine with food from halfway around the globe. But if you go to an “ordinary” grocery store looking, you will probably buy food grown and manufactured all over the world. There are even stores that specialize in locally grown and sourced goods. The number of farmers markets has more than doubled in the past 10 years. The local food movement is big-time these days. I did not realize until recently that I should care whether my juice is from China. I keep it around partly for nostalgia, and partly because it makes me feel like a true computer scientist.Įvery time I use it, I have this mental image of using a 500 ton press to crack a walnut. Once in a blue moon I use Mathematica as an overpowered calculator. That isn't a disparaging remark, it is an accurate representation of reality. But it also means it is largely irrelevant software for most people, including the scientific community. It is their software and they can do whatever they want with it. There is no reason to believe this will change. Which has made it a very niche piece of software. Whether you are in academia, a working professional or just a hobbyist. But it has also always been impractical due to its pricing and restrictions. Mathematica has always been a lovely product. With people not learning Mathematica there never developed a demand for it - and because you couldn't expect to get your hands on a license it wasn't worth the investment both in time and money to learn mathematica, or worse yet, to make yourself dependent on it for getting work done. Mathematica wasn't very available because it was expensive, Wolfram wasn't easy to negotiate with. The guy who was in charge of negotiating software licenses for the university said that it was a chicken and egg problem. A few years later, when working at the university I was a bit puzzled to find that while you could find things like Matlab on the various computer labs around campus (usually running some flavor of Unix), Mathematica was nowhere to be seen. The first time I encountered Mathematica was 30 years ago, and I genuinely thought that within a decade this would be a tool that everyone would learn in college. Or more importantly, other people would have already. If Mathematica was more open, there would be no "dead end" there, I could simply extend it. I wanted to test some GPU-hosted ML stuff recently that's not the standard Pytorch/Tensorflow type of thing, checked Mathematica, gave up, and I'm now using Julia. You mentioned AI/ML having stopped dead in Mathematica. As you said, they're all markedly inferior in almost every way, except for one critical one: they're open and extensible. Python, Julia, and Jupyter notebooks will simply wipe out all usage of Mathematica outside of a few esoteric fields. a dead end.Ĭan I publish Wolfram code in Docker Hub and expect it to work (legally)? No.Ĭan I throw some Wolfram code into an Azure Function and have it compute something for me on demand? Nope.Ĭan I embed Wolfram code into a C# app, publish it on GitHub, and have other people be able to use it without forking out $thousands for a Mathematica license? Nope! There is no other use for Wolfram Language scripts outside of Mathematica, which comes with a "license server". Even formerly closed languages have been opened sourced, such as Java and C#. It's one thing to have a proprietary product, but for decades now proprietary languages have been a no-go for practically everyone. The saddest thing about Mathematica is that despite the incredible level of effort invested into it by some of the smartest people on the planet, it will inevitably be relegated to the dustbin of history.Īs a proprietary language and kernel, it can never compete long-term with open source alternatives. But the product - it really should get a lot more kudos and wow factor based on real accomplishments and features that are live, in the real world. This isn't to hide that there are some frustrating things about the language (like, machine learning development has just stopped dead after a couple of really great years of feature dev.why?) and, especially, the organisation and some of its personalities. The front-end is just lightyears in front of Jupyter notebooks in just about every conceivable way. You can get the entire Wolfram Alpha knowledgebase and curated datasets to use in your programs immediately. The integrated libraries are fantastic - especially if you want to chain together different knowledge domains through a consistent interface and syntax. If you enjoy functional programming, the language is super expressive and productive. Rather than just bashing Stephen's personality and rehashing Cosma Shalizi's driveby on NKOS, can we try and focus on the technical accomplishment that Mathematica represents?
